Neil Shearing’s Internet Marketing Strategies

OK, so yesterday I mentioned Sterling Valentine’s JV Formula launch to my contacts and over 800 people have visited the sales page so far. I should’ve known better, after seeing the results of adding bonuses to Michael Cheney’s offer, than to just send people through my affiliate link to “take a look” and hope they purchased. I should’ve added special, high value, unique bonuses to anyone who bought Sterling’s product as a result of my email. I just thought I’d mention that the Zopa blog kindly linked to this blog in response to a request I sent via email. Now that’s quite a handy PR5 link to this blog… and already Wordpress are reporting it to me in the blog admin interface. I like Zopa and have already blogged about it here… it’s a great idea to let people act as lenders or borrowers at much better rates than the banks, credit cards, most personal loans and even a few mortgages.

A lot of “gurus” will show you Alexa graphs of their traffic… especially if they’ve shot into the top 500 most visited sites online like Michael Cheney did recently.

But not many marketer’s will show you a “twin peaks” chart… but I think it’s quite novel to see a graph representing what can happen when you get a sudden traffic surge because of a list promotion followed by a rebound when the site goes back to less traffic. I’ve done two mailouts promoting this blog, and here are the “twin peaks”…

One of the hardest things to create for your websites is content. Where does it come from? Is it articles you write by hand? Is it articles you pay people to write for you? Is it your own blog like this one? Is it user-submitted content like forum posts, reviews or links added to a directory? Is it re-written ”pseudo” content? Is it “scraped” content? Is it imported RSS feeds? Is it a mix of everything?

In short, where does your content come from? If you can get quality content for next to nothing and without a significant time investment, you’ve struck gold!

How about this for coming very close to perfection? A monthly members site where they give you the Private Label Rights to 4 Quality Niche Ebooks each month? By getting the ebooks created and then syndicating them to their members, you get to save 98% on the cost of getting the ebooks written yourself. There are a maximum of 300 members, so there isn’t much competition for the ebooks. You also get a salesletter, professional graphics, a keyword list (for Pay Per Click traffic), an autoresponder series (for following up with prospects) and tips for which affiliate programs to use… for ALL four niches monthly.

Here’s an money tip… take the Word document of each ebook, split it up into separate pages, edit the pages to make them unique, put them online and place Adsense ads around them. How much competition would you have in each of the four separate niches? Not much I’d expect. With this plan you don’t actually sell the ebooks, you just use the great content inside them for your own niche websites… and make money from the Adsense ads.

What’s the catch? Simple… according to their website…

“- If you intend to generate content pages for your websites from the ebook’s material, you must make some changes to it (ie. at least 25%).”

…so you need to make some changes to the ebook text and make it unique. Presumably, that prevents your site from falling foul of the search engine’s duplicate content penalty anyway… so you’re effectively helping yourself.

I don’t know whether or not I’m bonkers trying to draw a comparison between planting and growing a new hedge in my back garden and your online business? Am I? Probably.

Back on April 30th I mentioned planting my new hedge on this blog. I drew parallels with how an online business needs to be started, nurtured and cared for before it will grow, establish and reach the size you want. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it will happen.

Let’s look at some results…

Since I started the blog, I’ve been trying to get it indexed by Google and perhaps, eventually have it listed as number one under “Neil Shearing”. I tried issuing a press release (posted here and here ), submitting a Google Sitemap (posted here and here ) and I also pointed links to it from Incomemax.com and Scamfreezone.com. The results? If you search for “neilshearing” the blog is number one with a supplemental page listing under the main search result, and if you search for “Neil Shearing” the blog is the fourth site returned. Google has indexed 46 pages from this blog. Seeing as I’ve made only 53 posts, that’s not bad.

Also, during the time since we launched the blog, Michael Cheney has sold thousands of copies of his Adsense Videos in 7 days during which I earned $13,000 in Clickbank commissions and became his top selling affiliate earning a $495 bonus, Michael and I released a report, “Stolen Tactics” where we revealed what tactics we’d “stolen” from each other, and then Michael released his launch videos for free which I revealed in a blog exclusive right here. I also added a spam filter to my Outlook email application which is working nicely, and Sterling Valentine is only a few days from a launch which will probably blow away any launch before it!

… and the hedge? It’s growing nicely. I know I can’t take a useful picture of the hedge to save my life, but if you click on the graphic you’ll see a larger version which may just show you how much one of the hedge plants has grown in two weeks.

The Cloudmark plugin for Microsoft Outlook which I mentioned yesterday is working well. It’s trapped over 100 pieces of junk in the last 24 hours and I’ve only found 2 false positives (emails in the spam folder that weren’t spam). I’m happy with that.

Speaking of which, there’s a very plausible bit of spam going around at the moment which phishes for your PayPal account details. The spam says you’ve paid several hundred dollars for a plasma tv and if you don’t want it should log in to cancel. Naturally, the link takes you to a site that’s not PayPal and attempts to steal your login information. So please, keep an eye out for that… it looks very real. To be on the safe side, I only ever visit PayPal from a link on my browser’s “Start” page. I know that one’s genuine.

Hey, it’s not every day you win a competition, right… and certainly not a sales competition against the likes of Joel Comm, Michael Campbell, Mike Filsaime and other top sellers. I’m not interested in bragging, I’m interested in showing you what’s possible with an online business… working your own hours from your own home.

Hey, I’m getting a tad frustrated with spam.

I know that I hardly ever see a piece of spam in my Google Mail inbox… they do a great job of filtering it out.

So why do I see so much spam in my regular POP box (my @scamfreezone.com mailbox)?

Well, it’s because I’ve had some of the “@scamfreezone.com” email addresses for a long time and they’ve probably been sold around the world ten times by spammers.

So, I’ve decided to use a “p2p” anti-spam system against the spam arriving in my inbox… I’ve downloaded the free (trial) plugin for Outlook from Cloudmark. The plugin monitors arriving email and chucks it into a spam folder if it matches the anti-spam criteria. Cloudmark uses all the feedback from its thousands of user reports to determing what’s spam and what’s not (a so-called peer-to-peer or p2p system). Presumably, with everyone reporting spam, it quickly gets identified and then blocked so that other users don’t see it. At any time you can check your spam folder for false positives, but I don’t expect to see very many of those.

I once launched an anti-spam software solution… spamblitzer. It didn’t do very well because we couldn’t get past the horrendous complexity of multiple pop boxes, html emails, filters and so on. It was just a logistical nightmare.

Hopefully Cloudmark does a better job and I’ll see less spam in my regular inbox.

I actually read about one marketer who’s switching all his email to go through his Gmail account… that’s another potential solution I guess, if Cloudmark doesn’t help.

When I consider that the extra bonuses boosted my sales, decreased my refunds and resulted in very happy customers, it makes me very happy. The ad took me straight to a movie where I saw Michael build his credibility from someone who was unknown to me to “expert status” by reporting 3rd party endorsements of him such as an appearance on NBC-Europe and various mentions in quality newspapers and magazines. He then goes on to tell us the money he’s making from Adsense ($16,700 in January 2006!) and Clickbank ($7,179 in January 2006!).
 
Michael definitely knows how to build credibility and get people interested in what he has to say!
 
At the end of the movie, which is powerful and professional, he asks you to sign up for further movies… one per day plus one given immediately… by providing your name and email address. That’s a very smart way to get people to opt-in to your list…
 
First, he had a quality advert in a quality newsletter.
 
Second, he launched into a professional movie which built his “expert” status and contained valuable information.
 
Third, he asked for a name and email which he’s much more likely to get than a direct sale.
 
Fourth, he promises *many* follow-up movies, with one delivered immediately.
 
I was hooked. It was obvious to me that Michael was someone I should get to know and learn his “secrets”… especially the Adsense ones!
 
I’ve been around for about 10 years online… I think Michael’s been online longer(!). We both know there aren’t any real “secrets” to making money online… but we also know that there ARE tactics that, individually, we don’t know… tactics that we can learn from others and apply to our online businesses.
 
What may surprise you is that those “small things” that others are doing that you’re not can be worth tens of thousands of dollars in extra sales or commissions… they can make a huge difference!

I mentioned my offer to my customers, Arm Twister’s discount list and my affiliates in two email broadcasts on Tuesday. Initially I was only offering the bonuses for 48 hours to provide a strong purchase incentive. Louis lets me know about his new product each month, so I knew in advance it was going to be about Adsense and perfect as a quality bonus. I recorded my own 10-minute movie on what Michael’s videos had taught me, and how I used that information to make more Adsense money with less traffic.
 
The results were phenomenal!
 
… I sent over 3,000 visitors to Michael’s site and each click earned me the equivalent of over $3!
 
… I personally generated 240 sales for Michael (at time of writing) worth over $20,000 in less than seven days.
 
… I personally earned over $10,000 in Clickbank commissions from the sales I referred.
 
… I’ve been at the top of Michael’s Joint Venture partner leaderboard from the launch on Tuesday 2nd May until today, Monday 8th May. Will I be there tomorrow, at the end of the competition, and earn a $495 bonus for winning? I don’t know. What I do know is that I’ve fought off such names as Mike Filsaime, Michael Campbell, Ewen Chia, Joel Comm, Peter Twist, Chris Lee, Simon Coulson and every other JV partner who has promoted the videos… so far!
 
Those are just staggeringly impressive affiliate data. I haven’t seen anything like that from any previous promotions I’ve done. The reasons for such a successful promotion are many…
 
1: The product was excellent… as was the sales letter.
 
2: There was a 7-day discount. Although, Michael doesn’t say how much the price will increase by after the discount ends… a clever twist to a smart tactic.
 
3: The topic (Adsense) is very hot at the moment and products on it sell well.
 
4: I adopted Michael’s “extra bonuses” technique and it did phenomenally well. On top of increasing sales, I also got many, many thankyou notes from people who had ordered via my link saying how nice it was of me to offer additional bonuses… which enhanced my reputation with my list. I also got emails from people saying the bonuses had tipped them into ordering. Presumably, without the bonuses, they wouldn’t have ordered and I wouldn’t have got any commission. Also, I got an email from one person saying he’d received other promotions that day for the same product, but ordered using my link for the extra bonuses.
 
5: The extra bonuses I offered were not “fluff”. The Louis’ Allport product was about earning more from Adsense and my own movie was on what I learned from Michael and how I applied his tips was personal and original. No-one else would be offering the same bonuses as me.
 
Interestingly, Michael has this to say about how he used ideas I employed during my Insider Secrets Launch to enhance the sales of his upcoming Adsense Videos. I’ll let him say it in his own words…

I first heard of Neil years ago when I was searching around for decent Internet marketing information. I landed on his site and I knew right away that this guy was telling it straight. I have a long-held belief that the Internet boils down to just 2 things and that if you get these 2 things right you ‘get it’.
 
These 2 things are information and interaction.
 
People want information that is relevant, valuable and they want it as quickly as possible.  They also want interaction (otherwise the Internet is no different to printed media).  Neil over-delivers on both the information and interaction front and that’s why I knew that I needed to keep track of what he said and products he brought out.
 
Many weeks before the launch of AdSense Videos I was personally introduced to Neil and we started getting in touch via email. Back then Neil was about to launch his own product ‘Insider Rollout Secrets’ and he convinced me to promote it to my lists.
 
I’m SO glad he did because I made a ton of cash and was able to simultaneously show Neil that I knew what I was doing and that he might want to reciprocate and promote AdSense Videos.
 
On average for that promotion I made over $3 per click!
 
* What Neil has taught me
 
Where do I start?!  By watching his product launch close at hand and working through his Insider Rollout Secrets product I was able to see a master at work.  Some really cool tricks I learned from Neil;
 
- Offer a special discount rate for a set time period (mine was to reward quick decision makers and first movers)
 
- Offer affiliates and JV partners a special commission rate for a set time period (mine was 60% for Launch Week)
 
- There’s a heap of cash to be made from back-end sales (I wasn’t include back-end sales as being essential purchases for people watching the videos but if there were products I knew would help them make more money I recommended them)
 
- Use a numbered contents overview for large emails (e.g. 1 - LAUNCH DATE, 2 - PROMO TOOLS etc. this might sound obvious or basic but believe me - when you’re contacting affiliates you sometimes have a ton of info to get over to them and doing it like this really helps)
 
- Neil gave away a free report in the week before his product launch so that he was fresh in people’s minds and affiliates could use it to their lists for the same purposes (I borrowed this entire approach by releasing a teaser video for my list and my JV partners and affiliate before AdSense Videos went live - I got over 3000 optin subscribers BEFORE the site even went live!)
 
All in all I think Neil and I have fired off each other and helped generate a massive amount of business for one another. That’s why I truly believe that in this “Internet game” to really grow, expand and successful you need to hang around people who are already successful.  Givers’ gain - the more people you can help and the more you can help them the more you will get back in return.  Hey I’m not a hippy maaan! I’m just saying that as I type this (Monday 8th May - 6 days into my launch) I have sold $174,087 of products and it’s not just down to what I know - it’s also down to what I’ve learned from other people too.

So there you have it… right from the horse’s mouths (hey, I don’t like that analogy much!)… how Neil borrowed some of Michael’s affiliate promotion tactics to promote Adsense Videos and earn $10,000 in commissions AND how Michael borrowed some of Neil’s tactics to amplify the launch of Adsense Videos and generate over 2,000 sales and $174,087 in less than a week!
