Powderham Castle

One of the best parts of running your own Internet business is that you’re the boss, so you decide whether or not you’ve earned a day off. :-)

Yesterday was a beautiful day here in Devon… a real corker… so we decided to have a picnic at a local castle and have a wander round. Yes, we do have local castles as well as incredible beaches. ;-)

So, here’s a picture of the castle we visited…

If you’re interested, here’s a link to the official website.

I kinda like the history of these castles, but it can quickly become overwhelming. Here’s a small snippet…

Powderham was begun by Sir Philip Courtenay in 1390, and it has been the seat of the Earls of Devon ever since. It took Sir Philip almost 30 years to complete this fortress on the banks of the Exe, but the castle that greets the eye of visitors today is largely the result of Victorian renovation by Charles Fowler, architect of Covent Garden, London.

What I found interesting was that what is now the back of the castle was originally the front and people used to sail up the river Exe, tie up their boats and approach the castle from the river side, not the road side as we do now. It’s quite surprising that a castle was built so close to a river on low-lying land. Not exactly the best place to fortify and defend, but who am I to judge. ;-)
