Kontera eCPM… Early Data…
Well, I didn’t take off Adsense ads from my pages, so I guess the earnings from Kontera have to be seen in that light. Even so, I’m quite surprised at how low the eCPM is.
(eCPM is earnings per thousand page impressions)
After 4,000+ page impressions the clickthrough rate is above 5%, which shows that people are seeing and clicking on the ads, but the eCPM is under $5.
My Adsense eCPM was about $19 and that seems to have gone down to about $15… but if you add the Adsense and Kontera earnings, I’m getting just slightly more… about $20 eCPM.
I guess the Kontera ads will be staying. Despite the low eCPM, they offer some extra content to visitors and have slightly boosted the overall eCPM. I’ll be checking the stats again after a longer period of time and see if the same holds true.

Hi Vered,
Thanks for your comments.
Regarding these optimization tips at the Kontera blog…
http://blog.kontera.com/2007/11/01/tips-and-tricks-to-optimize-contentlinks%e2%84%a2-for-your-site/trackback/
I’ve already requested that Kontera don’t show ads from Dealtime.com or Shopping.com at my site and have had that request acknowledged.
It’s my belief that weeding out the advertisers paying the minimum clickthrough will increase the eCPM. Some advertisers, such as the ones above, are bidding on huge numbers of generic keywords… which doesn’t really help my visitors or me as a publisher.
As for zoning the ads, that isn’t really applicable because the ads are being shown on articles which make up 95% of the content of each page.
I don’t think changing the link color will make much difference. As I’ve said, I’m getting a 5% clickthrough rate… the problem is the CPM.
My content is varied and generic. I would expect to be earning the average CPM of a Kontera publisher. As I said, I was earning about $19 EPM using only Adsense… which I guess is about their average.
So I would *guess* that $5 eCPM is the average CPM across the network of Kontera publishers?

Neil,
Did you ever notice difference with the change that Kontera put in for you?. I have an article site too and I’m experiencing low eCPM.
Thanks

Hi Dominic,
I lost some site traffic due to my own foobaring of the site.. but, no, there wasn’t any impact. The stats stayed the same.
Neil.
