Geo-Targeting Software For Geo-Specific Websites
Thursday, April 30th, 2009If you sell a geo-specific service, such as a financial service or any product that has different regional or national laws applicable to it, you may want to consider investing in software that shows different webpages to visitors depending on where they are in the world.
It’s quite a simple concept. Each visitor who requests a webpage from a server passes their IP address with their request. It’s then possible to do a “reverse ip lookup” to work out roughly where in the world that person is. When you have that information, it’s possible for the server to redirect the visitor to whichever webpage is most suitable for that visitor based on rules you define.
Lots of websites already use this technology. For example, Google will show me “google.co.uk” even if I type in “google.com” because it knows I’m surfing from Britain. Abercrombie and Fitch will redirect me from their US website to their UK one automatically.
So where can you get the server scripts that allow you to implement such geo-specific visitor redirects? Well, a friend of mine, Gordon, is offering such scripts at his website. He calls the product Geo-Targeter Pro Redirecting Software and currently has a very tempting special offer running.
Just imagine if you could redirect visitors who weren’t eligible for your website’s main offer, because of their geo-location, to a “secondary” offer, and convert a few into sales each day… that would be a nice little revenue stream. It would sure beat turning those visitors away, or annoying them because they can’t purchase your main offer.
