In my case, I found that it is the anchors used in the links to my site.

Managed to get one site in the top 3 of google UK for 'auction finance'. The site wasn't affected by the penguin, but I did gain a link to the site after the update using the anchor 'auction finance'.

As soon as the page with the link was indexed the site disappeared completely from search listings. I'm not talking dropping a few places or pages, gone for that one phrase.

However, I got the webmaster to delete the link and within minutes of the page carrying the link getting indexed with the link, I was back in the top 3.

I'd advised making a list of the phrases you have dropped for, compare them with recent link building efforts and politely ask the webmasters of the link carrying page to delete the link.

Thanks Neil for the clarification, my sites have low keyword optimisation with the above site having nothing higher than 1.7% density, it has now reached a page 2 rank with very few posts but as I care little for Google opinion I will carry on as I am and build relationships with other marketers and create natural content rather than following the latest SEO fad.

Several of my sites had been hit by this infamous update, interestingly, I have some spammy blogposts on blogger than are now reaching #1 position without linking in medium competitive phrases.

This update is really bad!

Hi Ben,

I want to keep the same domain but replace current design with a new design.

I would do that. Your site can recover from Google penalties, over time, with the right actions.

My domain is 3 years old , I want to keep the same domain but replace current design with a new design. Should I do that? is this will affect current Google Index ? or I just keep this one and start a new one with a new domain?
This is my last question . Thank you for your help.

This is happening to me as well. In fact this week, my main site that got slapped with the Penguin update, replaced the lost income on Monday and Tuesday with traffic from Bing and Yahoo. It blew me away. I makes me wonder if I had not lost the ranking in Google, if I would have doubled my income.

I agree. I think there are tweaks needed because they went a bit too far. :)

Fair enough (best of both worlds), but looking at the niches where my sites have been hit, it looks like everyone was over optimised! As a result, I've seen some pretty poor results on the front page. At one point, an XML sitemap was ranking!

I can understand if they want to punish people for over optimising, but it can't be a good move for their customers if it's resulted in worse search results for them.

Overall I thought Panda did its job quite well (ok it some good sites too), but this Penguin update seems to have been a bit of a failure in terms of improving search results.

Hi Pete,

I don’t see why they’d want to present a poor result, instead of one where the owner might have gone a little overboard on the SEO.

I think they want something in the middle... quality, but not overly-optimised. :)
